The aesthetic of my home screen was too different to the aesthetic of the Take Off section of the main experience, however, I felt that the Take-Off aesthetic was far stronger for a full project. I think I had lent too much into the ugliness of that ‘60s era of design, rather than taking inspiration from it and elevating it with modern design aspects. Because of this, I wanted to revisit my home pages and rework them to fit more into the new aesthetic. I am going to work with the main experience first though, then return to the home screens afterwards.

To lean more into this new style, I wanted to get some more inspiration. My first screens of the Take Off section reminded me of editorial design, so had a look at some for inspiration. Some of the designs that influenced me are seen below.

I didn’t want to just overwrite what I had did before, so wanted to re-contextualise some of the parts of my style tile into aspects that would fit in better in the new aesthetic. I actually think my original style tile is still very relevant to what I had done on the Take Off section, so didn’t need to change much. One of the main changes was changing from inky illustrations to inky expressive marks to be used in the background. This remained visually similar without having to just add in a fully illustrated image. It’s not about just using modern design, but taking parts of old design and reworking them into things that will work well in modern design.

With my art direction changed to work better, I could now move on to completing the main experience.
