The visual style of this project was going to be particularly important to telling the story of Apollo. I wanted to explore a range of style direction to find a style that would be unique but also work well for the webpage format.
To start exploring a visual style for the project, I created a series of mood boards.
Diagrams
The first mood board I created explored diagrams and visualisations of the Apollo mission and space in general. While these all look great and would work well as a general style for a web page, I felt that they were too safe of an option. Dark backgrounds with minimalist visual elements is somewhat typical of space related content. I wanted to explore more unexpected style that could be used.

Graphic Design
Next I looked a graphic design work relating to space. This was more to give me inspiration for shapes and other graphic elements rather than to direct the overall style. This also helped me to consider colour for the webpage as a lot of the examples I found used somewhat unconventional colours for space.

60s Futurism
The next style I explored was 60s Futurism, mainly from Gerry Anderson projects. I’m a big fan of thunderbirds and captain scarlet and always found the illustration styel these IP’s would use to be really unique and so engrained in that time. All those shows were also inspired by the space race, so it would fit the narrative to use them for style inspiration. This is something I want to consider further in more detail.

Technical Drawings
When exploring 60s Futurism, I found cross section drawings of some of the vehicles from Thunderbirds. These were incredibly done and amazing to look at and I thought it could be a good centre piece to focus the webpage around. I created another mood board looking at these technical drawings and other blue prints to think about what this could look like.
