Sketching

I began by sketching out some possible slide designs for the points I have written for the presentation content. This was just to get my brain thinking about the design, so the sketches are super quick and rough.

First Draft of Slides

After sketching out some slide ideas, I created a slide for each of my talking points. I kept these simple to just focus on what it was I was saying, however, I did make sure to have some slides that were more visually interesting, such as slide 3 where I photoshopped some images and removed the backgrounds to make a mini collage of the point I was talking about.

I also created a set of wireframes as an idea of what the app could look like. I used Whimsical for this as I had heard of it before as a good wire framing tool due to how restrictive it was and I think this worked really well for me. It allowed me to just get a general idea of what the app could look like without getting ahead of myself.

I also created a mockup of what advertising could look like to get users wanting to use the app. My idea was that there’ll be a group of users who already are happy to express their views and consider others, but getting the ones hard set in their views will be an issue. Using billboards with the statement of the day on it and asking how people felt about would get these hard-set people onto the app because they are generally the ones who want to shout the loudest anyway, and this will then expose them to other opinions.

Practicing Pitch

When practising my pitch with my slides, I was consistently running over the time I had. I began cutting down some parts of the pitch and removing some slides. When doing this, I actually found that there were better ways to deliver some of my ideas in the slides and found some points that I actually replaced with better points, such as replacing me asking how this could be solved, with me actually discussing my thinking behind what sort of content could be used to solve this.

I continued to tweak the presentation to get myself to the right time.

Refined Slides

I was able to get my presentation into 5 minutes with some work. The presentation was coming in at just over 5 minutes, which I thought was fine as I’m probably going to end talking quicker on the day. Also, some of the points I talked about in the last few slides around getting users, future visions, and success metrics, were things I thought I could cut if I needed to for time, as these were all things that would likely come up in my questions.
