Over the course of this semester, I will be recreating icons using illustrator once a week to help build confidence in using illustrator and to get a understanding of the proportions and shapes that are used in icons design.
For my first week I tried to choose icons from the selection that were fairly different in their shapes as I thought that would give me the best practice. I initially struggles using clipping and masking as this was something that had always confused me in Illustrator, but I persevered and managed to figure it out in the end. I was really pleased with the similarity I was able to achieve in my icons. This has been a really fun and useful exercise as it has allowed me to get a much better understanding of clipping and masking, as well as a general better understanding of illustrator.
For the second week of master apprentice work, I recreated icons from a different set to give myself a new challenge by having to create a new style of icon. The icons from this set were much more challenging to recreate than the first weeks set as they had a lot more rounded edges and unorthadox shapes. I think I managed to recreate a selection of the icons well and was pleased with what I managed to accompplish. The curved edges was a major challenge but was useful for me to learn illustrator’s anchor point tools. Overall I was pleased with my finished recreations and was happy to be able to learn more of illustrators toolset.
For this weeks master apprentice exercise, I took a full screen of a music app and recreated it. By doing this, it not only gave me more practice drawing icons, but also began to get me thinking about icon positioning. This has definitely been the trickiest week so far, as there were so many aspects of the design to recreate, it felt quite overwhelming at times. However, I managed to create a recreation I was pleased with and felt looked very similar. Some of the difficulties I encountered had to do with the resolution of image I was working from, which made it hard to create the shapes exactly. I did my best to recreate all of the screen and do appreciate there are some small aspects that are slightly different, but overall feel this was a good attempt at recreating the screen.
