I came across a really interesting point around Edge Cases in the book which I want to consider more. The idea relates to the concept of design being a political act, and thus, the decision around our users is politically motivated. For a design that is supposed to be used by everyone, it’s common to find “Edge Cases”, which is a group of users that the design doesn’t work for, whether that be for accessibility or other reasons. Monteiro suggests that the acceptance of Edge Cases is actually laziness by designers and there’s no reason in the current world that we can’t design for everyone. This is particularly important when designing big platforms, where the 1% of users that make up the Edge Cases could be over 10000 users. This is something I want to keep in mind for myself, as it’s not just a positive thing to promote, but is also and interesting challenge that encourages better design.
