This, and all of the desk research blogs, give an overview of the process and steps taken for each part. I’ve included images taken from the FigJam boards where the majority of the work lives to illustrate the process.

If you would still like to see further details on each part, please view the FigJam board in full.

It can be found at the end of this page, or on this master page.

I want to conclude my desk research by defining what users I’ll be focussing on throughout this project. This will help me to start my user research, as well as keep it connected to the work I’ve already done.

External Users (For User Facing App)

From my problem statements, I had identified three users types based on how much they use/rely on public transport. For each, I gave them each a core value based on my survey and assumptions. I find giving users a core mindset or value to help a lot when getting into their heads.

Someone I hadn’t considered in my statement was a first time user (ie a tourist). I added them as a fourth as I feel thats as really important consideration.

I also replaced my initial language of light, medium, super user with novice, occasional, experienced, and expert. I find the initial language I had used to be a bit vague and uninformative despite it being widely used in the design world. I find this new language far more relatable and useful.

I think one of the strengths of this user set is that they form a spectrum of users, with different levels of knowledge and ability, rather than different aims. This means they’re all trying to do the same things, but will have different needs throughout. I find this to be much better than just having: user x needs feature x, user y needs feature y, etc.

Internal Users (For Back-End)

For the back-end users, these are more feature based users. I think this be an interesting different sort of challenge, as it be based on functional and utility needs rather than guidance and support.

While I’ve outlined these now, I’ll be focussing on them further down the line.

Reflection

With this being the end of my desk research, I feel I’m in a really good place. My users are informed choices based on my research and I think I have a good understanding of the industry and topic now.
